Sammy T's Historic Building Fredericksburg VA

The History of Sammy T's & 801 Caroline Street

A Fredericksburg Tradition

Housed in a historic 1804 building, Sammy T's has been a beloved part of Fredericksburg, Virginia, since 1981. Over the past two centuries, this location has served many roles, each leaving its mark on the city's story.

Originally known as Buck's Auction Room, the building was purchased in 1805 by Anthony Buck, an auctioneer dealing in real estate and goods. After the Civil War, it became home to the Fredericksburg Post Office until 1921, when it transformed into Horton's Auto Supply, an Amoco service and fueling station. By the 1930s, it had evolved into Dugan's Restaurant, a well-known downtown gathering place that remained a community staple until the late 1970s.

In 1981, Dr. Samuel T. Emory, a Geography professor at the University of Mary Washington, established Sammy T's, creating a restaurant known for its fresh food, welcoming atmosphere, and deep community roots. Over the years, it has remained a downtown icon, cherished by locals and visitors alike.

Now under the ownership of Jeff Small, a proud Fredericksburg resident, Sammy T's continues its long-standing tradition of serving delicious food in a warm and friendly environment. Jeff's passion for both local history and exceptional dining has led to an exciting new addition: Fredericksburg's very first Chicago-style deep-dish pizza. This bold and flavorful twist brings a whole new experience to Sammy T's while staying true to our commitment to quality and community.

Whether you're here for the first time or a longtime patron, we invite you to enjoy the unique Sammy T's experience—where history, great food, and community come together.
